Press Secretary Report No 7

In the Mens Premier League of the Colchester and District tennis league, Kirby A played and won three matches in the space of one week.  They first beat Frinton A 7-2 and then followed this with a tight 5-4 away victory at Dedham.  Their final win came against The Essex A, 7-2 and they are now in second place in the Division but still well behind the leaders, Spring Lane A.  The dominant team in Division One are Phoenix A who defeated Colchester Lawn A 8-1 but had a closer match with Kirby B, just coming out on top, 5-4.  David Morran and Daniel Russ managed to beat Kirby's first pair, David and Peter Hall, which helped clinch the victory.  In Division Two, Little Clacton tried desperately to win their first match of the season but went down 31/2 to 51/2 to Frinton C, losing three sets 7/9.  The Officers Club are unbeaten in this league, winning their last two matches 8-1 against Little Clacton and Dedham B.  It is hoped that the dreadful fire at their premises will not affect this club too badly.  Wivenhoe A have stretched their lead at the top of Division Three after an excellent 8-1 victory  over Colchester Lawn B.

The Essex A have virtually made sure of retaining the Ladies Premier League title after defeating their two closest rivals, firstly, Lexden Squash, a convincing 7-2 and secondly, Frinton A, 5-4.  The match against Frinton, who are their nearest challengers, was very close considering Frinton had only two pairs but Anita Todd and Jill Felsted kept Frinton in it by winning all their three sets, including one against the previously unbeaten pair of Jo Bond and Jenny King.  Lexden Squash B kept their very slim hopes of promotion from Division One alive after defeating Colchester Lawn A 8-1 but The Essex B are firm favourties after beating the already relegated Lexden Squash C, 7-2.  Wivenhoe A finished their season with a 6-3 win over the only team that could catch them at the top of Division Three, Frinton C.  Frinton still have three matches to play and it will be an anxious wait.

The battle for promotion from Division One of the Mixed league is getting closer.  Leaders, Lexden Squash A went down 5-4 to Lexden Hill, who are second.  Third placed Dedham, who have games in hand, won 6-3 against Spring Lane A.  Wivenhoe A have probably lost their chance of winning the Division Three title after being beaten 8-1 by Kirby B.  Despite most of the sets being closely fought, gaining only one point was a disappointing result for them.  West Mersea A are two points clear of Frinton D at the top of Division Four.  Both have one match to play and both teams played Spring Lane in their last match.  Frinton won 6-3 but West Mersea gained an extra point by winning 7-2.  A tie-break won by L & S Taylor could prove vital.  West Mersea B are also going well and are top of Division Five.
